Academics
Most of the faculties of this institution are involved in active research work.
Since project work has been incorporated in the syllabi of Final Degree Honours
and P.G. Programmes each faculty is guiding their students in pursuing their
research work. Besides, with the financial assistance of UGC, NCERT and ICSSR at
present 12 teachers have undertaken major and minor research projects. During
the last couple of years a sizeable number of faculty members have been awarded
the Ph.D. degree. A good number of teachers of this institution are also guiding
some research scholars for the award of Ph.D. in varied disciplines.
Besides the research activities, this institution has been engaged
in a number of extension activities. The broad areas of such activities are NSS,
NCC, Youth Red Cross and Rovers & Rangers manned by dedicated teachers of this
college. Student volunteers under the banner of such schemes render valuable and
need based social service activities during different festive occasions and
socio-cultural congregations besides normal social services.
The college like certain other autonomous colleges in the state maintains a
well-defined and transparent mode of selecting students for admission to the
various courses of study through common entrance test which comprehensibly
examine the students giving due weightage to their previous academic record
apart from assessing their performance in the CET. Many of the departments are
understaffed. Posts consequent on retirement have not been filled up as a matter
probably of state policy. Though the levels of inputs are not always viable, the
members of the teaching faculty have been pursuing their teaching with
commitment for completion of the courses within the stipulated period of time
specified in the academic calendar by engaging extra classes beyond the number
of classes allotted in the timetable. For the faculty members sincerely feel the
necessity for translating the vision of the founders of this college of
contributing to the human resource and socio-economic development of the region
and the state. The faculties constitute a sizable number of members who have
been recipient of important distinctions in their fields and their overall
participation in seminars, conferences in the nation and abroad have been fairly
commendable. The number of teaching days in the college last year was over 200
working days. All the departments conduct seminars fortnightly inviting eminent
academicians, cultural icons and men having literary achievement of both
national and international repute. Though by large, instruction has been
imparted by means of direct classroom interactions, efforts are indeed made to
adopt innovative teaching methodologies in the classroom. In several Honours and
P.G classes’ audio-visual mode of instruction is also made available to the
students. The teaching staff is well aware of UGC’s latest emphasis on the
conventional and the open system of imparting instruction and bringing both the
streams together. Hence teachers try to offer the more flexible patterns for
study and also incorporate the multimedia packages of instruction. Teaching in
general has been found to incorporate the latest subject trends and critical
approach. An important feature of the teaching situation in this college is that
the self-appraisal method of evaluation has been put into operation. This,
combined with student appraisal of teachers, for which a judicious Performa
needs to be carefully evolved, will yield place to a system of check and balance
in the academic audit. Certain departments have been practising team teaching to
enable the students to gain from a plurality of perspectives made available to
him in the same class.
The college follows the conventional examination and evaluation
system. It has been the practice that examinations are held as per schedule and
results are published without undue delay. The evaluation mode followed by the
college is central valuation by both external and internal examiners in the case
of undergraduate courses and external and internal evaluation for postgraduate
programmes. At the post-graduate level a better alternative is to subject every
script to one external and one internal evaluation. This is a more universally
adopted practice in colleges of Indian Universities. In order to make the
mechanism transparent and fair revaluation should be made available.
This institution achieves its mission of providing higher education to the
younger population not only of this State but of other States also. Students not
only receive information regarding the admission procedure and the Elective and
Honours options available to them from the annually published prospectus but
become benefited from the counselling provided to them by the staff of the
institution and other agencies like Dist. Employment Exchange, Xavier Institute
of Management etc. in choosing their career-oriented programmes. A student
information centre is also in operation from time to time counselling in
academic and personal fields. Besides, proctors also meet a small group of
students in time intervals to solve the personal and academic problems.
To encourage students and to create a healthy study atmosphere,
incentives in the form of scholarships are given to meritorious and deserving
students. About 20% of the student population receives various scholarships like
National Scholarship, Merits Scholarship, Merit-cum-Means Scholarship, Sports
Scholarship etc. That apart there is also provision for free studentship for
poor and meritorious students besides facilities for financial assistance from
the Students’ Aid Fund.
The Alumni Association of this institution meets bimonthly. Many
alumni are placed in high positions in the country and abroad in all walks of
life, like Judiciary, Legal professions, Education, Medicines and
Administrations etc.
In recreation and leisure time the students refresh their mind in engaging
themselves in various indoor and outdoor games provided by the Common Room
Association of this college. This Association along with the Dramatic
Association and Athletic Association provides recreational benefit to students
by organising cultural, dramatic, musical functions of different varieties along
with sports and athletic events.
